<dc:description>Educational institutions - schools and universities in Somalia are based only on traditional learning; they follow the conventional face-to-face classroom lectures. The sudden outbreak of a pandemic called COVID-19 caused by a Corona Virus shook the entire world. To help contain the pandemic, the ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education(MOECHE) of Somalia ordered the closure of schools and universities to help control the virus as social distancing is the best way to prevent COVID-19 and overcrowded classrooms pose a challenge for distancing.

SomaliRENs' member institutions, most of which are privately run, faced an economic crisis following the country's suspension of teaching and learning. They rely on students' tuition to sustain their institutions. To ensure continuity of operations and avoid a significant disruption, SomaliREN provided relief to its member institutions by offering its customized video conferencing platform, which universities are now using for remote teaching and learning. This is a free open-source-based research and education communication-system using BigBlueButton, specially designed for academic institutions with comparable features and quality to commercial ones such as Zoom and Cisco Webex.</dc:description>

          <dc:description>Abstract

People with disabilities, specially the blind have major difficulties in moving alone so they usually depend on others. The primary tools they used for movement is the traditional walking stick to detect objects on their ways. Smart sticks, also known as walking canes, or ultra-cane came as a proposed solution to enable blind to identify the world around them more conveniently. Somali people with disabilities suffer more than their worldwide counterparts because of the scarcity of smart mobility aids that they can easily adopt and understand.

In this work, we propose and implement a Somali language speaking smart stick for the visually impaired people to improve their mobility and independence in their daily life. This tool is especially useful for those who have difficulty in comprehending vibration features provided by some smart sticks. The stick can detect objects in the range of between 2 cm to 200 cm. When an object is detected, a sound from the SD Card Module through the airphone will alert the user (in Somali Language), about the object to safely avoid it. A moisture sensor to detect the water and LDR to detect light and dark situations are also provided. C++ programming language was used to implement features in the stick. Our new mobility aid was tested by blind and showed their appreciation and recommended it development to commercial or full usage stage.</dc:description>

It shows that the most affected European country is Italy, where the total confirmed cases are 80539, while in Western Pacific Region, China was the first affected country by 82078 as total confirmed cases; however, the United States of America has total confirmed cases of 68334. Thus, the authorities of public health around the world must keep supervising the situation carefully, as the more the scientists can search about this deadly virus and its associated outbreak, the response and result will be better. Otherwise, the situation will go further to include damage to the whole world including the economic severe crisis. Based on that, the current study uniquely contributes to suggesting which systems should be continued under the unusual economic changes facing the whole world because of this awful pandemic. This study takes advantage of the 2020 financial crisis due to Coronavirus as a sudden and negative exogenous trauma that influenced the economies of all countries and the rest of the vital and social pillars in the world via focusing on Corporate Governance and Islamic Finance Industry as control systems and methods that should be continued in the time of the current pandemic. Noting that because of the current pandemic, there has been a shift to digital platform instead of keeping on using physical financial documents and this will lead to a diversity in purposes, highly efficient trade and secure</dc:description>

This study is a qualitative research on the concepts of Islamic knowledge and how they relate to the English lexicon. The locus of the research paper is the epistemic context of the concepts of Islamic knowledge and linguistic context of the English lexicon. The specific themes at the centre of the study are Islamic terms and English words. The Islamic epistemological context overarches the theme of Islamic terms and the linguistic context overarches the theme of English words. The paper elucidates the sources of the concepts of Islamic knowledge that provide the crucial context of discussing the Islamic terms. The study discusses the Islamic terms that symbolize and convey the concepts of Islamic knowledge and their meanings within the context of the Islamic epistemological tradition. The paper proceeds from there to delineate the conceptual variable formulated in the research that explains the question of the equivalence of these Islamic terms with English words. This conceptual variable makes a significant distinction by clarifying that the translation is from Islamic terms into English words; not between two languages. Having defined and explained the corpus of Islamic terms, the selected Islamic terms are then juxtaposed with the definitions of the English words that are regarded and usually used as their equivalents. The research examines the meanings of the English words comparing them with meanings of Islamic terms. The study shows that the meanings expressed by the Islamic terms, because they symbolize and convey the concepts of Islamic spiritual knowledge, are not captured by the English words. The conceptual system of the meanings of the Islamic terms come from the spiritual knowledge of Islam whilst the English words, though having concise and precise definitions and meanings in their linguistic context, indicate a temporal axiological orientation.</dc:description>

          <dc:description>Abstract
The development of mobile money services permits businesses and individuals to get access to financial services and become part of the financial system. Access to the financial system is a key driver to business growth and entrepreneurial development in Somalia and in many parts of the world. The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of mobile
money services to the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in Somalia. We applied dynamic capability theory to examine the factors that affect business growth. This study employed cross sectional research design and used quantitative techniques to analyze the data of the study. The target population of the study was business owners that are in major cities in Somalia. A sample of 138 businesses categorized by trade, services, and manufacturers were studied. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the cross-section data collected from the various respondents. For regression analysis, Robust Least Squares (ROBUSTLS), is used to estimate the model parameters of the study. We rejected the null hypothesis examined by
this study and we found that all variables have a positive contribution that is different from zero and is statistically significant. The result shows that a one percent increase of the access to finance contributes to business growth of about (0.186%) while a (1%) increase in sales growth, leads business to grow about (0.183%). The enhancement of the risk management by (1%) increases
business growth to about (0.225%). Product development is a dominant variable that leads to business growth as (1%) increase of the product development, leads business to grow about (0.254%). These results indicate that mobile money service has a positive and significant influence on the business’s ability to access finances. The increase of the mobile money adoption by(1%), causes access to finance to increase about (13%). Mobile money also contributes to the sales growth as a (1%) increase in the use of mobile money, causes sales to surge by (3%). Results show that a (1%) increase in the use of mobile money, leads the risk management to improve about (4%) and that a (1%) increase of the mobile money services, leads the product development to increase to about (9%). The stability of the data was examined using the CUSUM test and we found that the data is stable. The model has no multicollinearity problem and the heteroskedasticity and the serial correlation were corrected</dc:description>

          <dc:description>Abstract

Background: Wound infection is one of the public health problems worldwide associated with the colonization of bacterial pathogens and resistance to commonly used antibiotics. The study aimed to identify the most common bacterial pathogens that cause wound infections and their antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates from patients at shaafi Hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia. Methods: This study was a descriptive cross-sectional design conducted from January to June - 2020 at shaafi Hospital in Mogadishu –Somalia. A total of 80 patients were taken from wound swab; all specimens were directly cultured on standard media, then Gram stain and Biochemical tests were also done antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed following Standards guidelines and procedures of (CLSI). Results: A total of 80 patients were taken from the wound swab; of these, 25 samples shown significant growth, isolating 38 bacteria strains. The most bacteria that isolated was Staphylococcus aureus 15 (39.47%), followed by Escherichia coli 12 (32%), Klebsiella pneumonia 8 (21%), Proteus Vulgaris 2 (5%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1(3%). Staphylococcus aureus was entirely resistant to penicillin G, Ampicillin, and Methicillin, less sensitive to amoxicillin, and strongly sensitive to gentamicin. Moreover, All isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus Vulgaris were sensitive to gentamicin and norfloxacin. In contrast, all isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were resistant to gentamicin and norfloxacin. Conclusions: The study revealed that bacterial pathogens of wound infection were resistant to commonly used antibiotics in Mogadishu, Somalia, showing an increasing trend of antibiotic-resistant. The study suggested that timely diagnosis with antimicrobial susceptibility is necessary before prescribing appropriate antibiotics. <dc:description>ABSTRACT

As for HIV/AIDS, there is an estimate of 10,500 living with HIV/AIDS in Somalia. Children living with HIV are also estimated at 500. Among HIV positive people, only 35% attend ART centers for medications. This study aims to assess discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS in Somalia.

With the support of People Living with HIV (PLHIV), the researcher targeted 346 respondents but those accepted to participate were 187 PLHIV including 102 females and 85 males live in different regional states in Somalia. During data collection the researcher either met face to face with the respondent or communicated by telephone. The study doesn’t assess how people become HIV positive. However, the study found nearly half of the respondents became HIV positive for the past five years. Stigma and discrimination are the major challenges face PLHIV. The assessment conducted 1st Dec. 2020 – 10th Jan. 2021

Gender: According to the reports from ART centers’ prevalence rate of the people living with HIV; the female ratio is higher than the male ratio. Thus, the study surveyed 187 people living with HIV, including 102 females and 85 males. This makes females are over-represented in this survey sample.

Respondents’ Age Group: Youth age is considered a risk age for HIV. However, during the data collection, all ages were given equal chance to participate and selected randomly from the PLHIV in different states in Somalia. The study found 40% of the respondents aged between 20-30 years, while one-third (33%) aged between 31-40. The age of 41-50 is 16%. Only 11% of the respondents are above 50 years.

Marital status: There was no primary hypothesis that married and divorced persons have a much higher risk of HIV than never-married persons. However, the study found that married respondents were about five-in-ten (53%) while either divorced or widowed were slightly lower than married and they were 47%. The study also found that when the person is HIV positive; polygamy is a risk factor that increases the infection among the community.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The proposed event frames in the landscape of actions carried out in Africa to promote FAIR principles and Open Science commons, such as digital repositories and persistent identifiers both for researchers and their research outputs. We aim at bringing in the same virtual place solution seekers, solution providers, policy makers and end users to trigger new collaborations through an original and innovative “try before you buy” approach.
The event is proposed to last 3 hours and it is divided in three parts: a workshop, a brokerage session, and a hands-on tutorial.

Although the proposed event is mainly targeting the ASREN region, it already includes contributions from Europe as well as from other parts of Africa and, if the proposal will be accepted, proponents will act to involve as many other countries as possible due to their involvement in AfricaConnect3, LIBSENSE and other related initiative.</dc:description>

<dc:description>In recent years the usages of mobile banking and in particular, payments by means of mobile phones have increased in Somalia (Abdullah). That is the reason this study attempted to investigate the impact of the mobile bank on economic development in Puntland. The study was guided by the following objectives; the first objective was to examine the extent of mobile money in which can facilitate economic transactions, and the second objective was to investigate challenges arising from Mobile Money Services and its solutions. This study was conducted through an analytical survey design by using both quantitative and qualitative research methods in two-parts: A questionnaire and key informant interviews (KIIs) for collecting data and from selected respondents.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Introduction: Several studies suggest increasing rates of antibiotic resistance among adult populations with Urinary tract infections (UTI). Escherichia coli (E. coli), is the predominant bacterium both in the community and in hospital environments causing uropathogenic infections. This study aimed to estimate the common uropathogen bacteria that cause UTI among outpatients as well as to determine the antibiotic resistance pattern of E. coli isolates among outpatients with UTI infections at Shaafi hospital, Mogadishu, Somalia.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Shaafi Hospital, Mogadishu, Somalia. A total of 128 samples were collected from outpatients suspected of UTI and tested through bacteriological investigations and antimicrobial susceptibility tests following the Kirby-Bauer agar disc diffusion method.

Results: E. coli was isolated in 34 (41%) out of the total 83 samples that showed growth followed by Staphylococcus aureus 22 (26.5%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 13 (15.7%), Klebsiella pneumoniae 8 (9.6 %) and Proteus spp. 6 (7.2%). E. coli was highly sensitive to nitrofurantoin, 29 (85.3%), and ciprofloxacin (n = 23, 67.6%), and had the highest resistance rate of ceftriaxone, 33 (97.1%). The odds of having UTI were higher in patients with a history of UTI (Odds ratio OR = 0.211, 95% confidence interval CI: 0.080, 0.553) and history of antibiotic use (OR = 0.322, 95% CI: 0.113, 0.917). Increased resistance rate of E. coli against cephalosporins could be due to its excessive use as empirical therapy.

Conclusion: The study indicates that outpatients with UTI could be at high risk of antibiotic resistance, suggesting regular surveillance and monitoring of antibiotics.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Suppose you want to build a computer network, one that has the potential to grow to global proportions and to support applications as diverse as teleconferencing, video on demand, electronic commerce, distributed computing, and digital libraries. What available technologies would serve as the underlying building blocks, and what kind of software architecture would you design to integrate these building blocks into an effective communication service? Answering this question is the overriding goal of this book—to describe the available building materials and then to show how they can be used to construct a network from the ground up</dc:description>

          <dc:description>Abstract

Poverty is a complex, interlocked and multidimensional phenomenon. The notion of poverty is used to refer to a wide-ranging set of interrelated life chances valued differently in the world's diverse cultures. The lack of awareness and inadequate understanding of the agro-pastoral way of life among the policymakers has led to the exclusion of their particular issues from policy development. Policymakers in the past were favouring crop farming. Such perceptions are generally ill-suited to the comparative advantages of the pastoral areas and their way of life. Consequently, Somalia agro-pastoralist has experienced decades of deterrent policies and socio-political exclusion agro-pastoralist development is vital for the sustainable growth of the Somalia economy. Sustainable poverty reduction in these areas requires long-term, holistic and integrated development interventions that necessitate the communities' genuine participation and empowerment. This research is conducted in Lower Shabelle, Somalia, with specific objectives of estimating the magnitude of poverty and identifying determinants of household poverty. The study employs both primary and secondary data. A total of 160 randomly selected household heads are interviewed in person through a semi-structured questionnaire.

The data collected is analysed utilising descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, and percentage. On the other hand, t and chi-square tests are used to compare poor and non-poor sample groups with respect to the explanatory variable. Besides logit regression model is also employed to identify the determinants of poverty in the Lower Shabelle. Moreover, the FGT poverty index is used to examine the extent and severity of rural poverty.

The binary logit model estimation has also identified that a total of six variables out of the eleven variables entered in the model are found to be statistically significant.

These variables include family size, livestock ownership, farm size, dependency ratio, nonfarm income, sex, age. The study shows a severe problem of poverty in the Lower Shabelle. Therefore, to mitigate this problem and improve the well-being of rural households in the study area, some of the actions to be taken should include limiting family size and creating alternative livelihood opportunities other than just agriculture.</dc:description>

          <dc:description>Abstract:

This research paper summarizes the immense of the Gender Gap in Engineering and technology in Somalia. Engineering and computer science — two of the well-paid STEM fields — remain heavily male dominated. Although the gender gap in math and technology courses has narrowed in recent decades, females continue to be underrepresented in fields of Engineering and Technology.

The underrepresentation of women in Engineering and technology remains active due to the influences of following parameters: (a) Fewer Role Models, (b) gender-related stereotypes and biases, (c) occupational interests or preferences and (e) field-specific ability beliefs.

Our study is Quantitative research and Infinite Population target sampling procedure and selecting 155 respondent students graduated universities in Mogadishu-Somalia; with the use online Web survey instruments called KOBOTOOLBOX, Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics analysis.

Gender inequality in Engineering and technology can be reduced by proper monitoring, proper informing and creating necessary work conditions and also provide equally opportunity employments in these fields of engineering and technology to minimize field-specific ability beliefs.</dc:description>

          <dc:description>ABSTRACT

Air pollution is the largest environmental and public health challenge in the world today. It leads to adverse effects on human health, climate, and ecosystem. Air is getting polluted because of the release of Toxic gases by industries, vehicular emissions, and increased concentration of harmful gases, this necessitates a proper real-time measurement and analysis of air quality so that appropriate decisions can be taken in a timely period. In this work a system of measuring air quality index for Mogadishu city is proposed and implemented using IoT technology, C++ programming language and mobile programming. Evaluation and measurement of the air pollution were performed according to WHO guidelines with each level categorized by symbolized colors. To get the results of this investigation, we used some devices such as MQ3 for smoke sensors and air quality level for real- for the mobile e, NodeMCU send data to cloud firebase and data are shown in mobile application.</dc:description>

<dc:description>From its establishment, Puntland restored public institutions after the collapse of the central state in 1991 and civil servants were recruited to delivery public services. However, the civil servants were not recruited based on formal procedures rather based on clan quotas and recommendations by the key traditional elders and other informal powerholders. Most of the civil servants earned low wages and worked with very meagre budgets. These conditions affected service delivery and the performance of the civil servants.

Recognizing challenges, the World Bank partnered with the government and launched Puntland Civil Service Reform Strategy (2015-2017). The Strategy is expected to bring tangible changes in the structure and functions of the government. Recruitment of civil servants based on merit is one of the ambitious objectives of this reform strategy. However, the main challenge could be deeply embedded clan quotas. It is agaist this backdrop that this study aims to establish the challenges and opportunities of Puntland civil service sector reform.</dc:description>

          <dc:description>Abstract
Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is globally distributed with its attendant complications
such as chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Somalia is among the countries
with a high prevalence of HBV infection. This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice
(KAP) of healthcare workers (HCW) towards HBV infection in Mogadishu, Somalia. Methods The cross-sectional
the study was conducted on HCW to assess KAP towards HBV infection. Standardized
questionnaires were distributed to 470 HCW recruited for the study from five hospitals. Data for
demographic characteristics were described using percentages. Scores for KAP were presented as
mean ±standard deviation. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to deduce inferences
between the mean KAP and demographic characteristics of the participants. Spearman’s rho
correlation was used to determine any association between the KAP of the HCW. Results Of the 470
the distributed questionnaire, 430 questionnaires were returned with a response rate of 91.5%. Majority
(73%) of the participants had tertiary education. The mean scores for KAP were 16.3±4.4, 6.9±0.4,
7.03±1.5 respectively. Significant ( P<0.01 ) positive correlation between the KAP variables was
observed. Professional cadre and marital status were found to be associated with mean KAP (
P<0.001 ). Conclusion This study revealed an acceptable level of KAP among the HCW and a potential
source of participants for an awareness campaign against HBV infection in Somalia.</dc:description>
